This course examines special topics related to women, gender, and/or sexuality. Themes studied in the course may vary from year to year. With the permission of the Chair, this course may be repeated to a maximum of 6 credits hours if the material is substantially different.
This course examines the intersection of gender and disability as key aspects of lived experiences and vectors of oppression and resistance. It will also delve into the various narratives associated with different disabilities and ailments. Through a gender lens, we will examine a variety of topics including the difference between disability and impairment, the social constructions of disability and gender, the cultural meanings of gender and disability, ableism, the medical and the social models of disability, disability and reproductive rights, the psychosocial adjustment model, the pendular reconstruction of self among individuals with chronic illnesses and spinal cord injury, deaf culture, the gendering of disability, and the independent living movement.
